March
Compile and Organize Acceptances
As the Regular Decision results roll in throughout March, emotions will run high. Your first step is to strip the emotion away and get organized. Create a centralized spreadsheet to track every acceptance, waitlist, and rejection. Note the specific enrollment deposit deadlines for each accepted school, as a few universities may have unique extensions or requirements beyond the standard May 1st deadline.
If you are waitlisted at your top choice, you must still choose a college and submit a deposit to a backup school by May 1st to secure a seat somewhere. You can withdraw later if you are pulled off the waitlist.
Early April
The Financial Aid Audit
You cannot make an informed decision without comparing the money. Place your financial aid award letters side-by-side. Do not just look at the 'total aid' number—look at the 'net price' (the total cost of attendance minus scholarships and grants). Be incredibly wary of packages that heavily package Parent PLUS loans or unsubsidized student loans to make the bottom line look artificially low.
If your top-choice school is significantly more expensive than a competing offer, you have a brief window in early April to submit a formal financial aid appeal. Use competing offers as leverage.
Mid-April
Attend Admitted Student Days
Do not rely on the memory of a campus tour you took two years ago. Re-visit your top contenders during their Admitted Student Days. These events are specifically designed to give you a deeper look into the academic departments, housing, and campus culture. Picture yourself walking to class, eating in the dining halls, and living in the dorms.
Admitted Student Days are highly orchestrated marketing events. Break away from the official tour group to sit in the student union or a local coffee shop to observe the authentic, unscripted student culture.
Late April
Connect with Faculty and Students
The brochure won't tell you if the pre-med advising is actually supportive or if the business school internships are fiercely cutthroat. Reach out to current students in your intended major. Email a professor in your prospective department to ask about undergraduate research opportunities. Their candid responses will tell you more about the institution's true value than any ranking list.
Ask current students: 'What is the one thing you wish you knew about this school before you committed?' Their answers are often the ultimate tie-breaker.
April 25th - 28th
The 'Must-Haves' ROI Check
It is time to make the final cut. Review your list of non-negotiable 'must-haves'—whether that is a specific major, geographic location, class size, or budget constraint. Which school provides the highest Return on Investment (ROI) for your specific career goals without placing an unbearable financial burden on your family? Make your decision based on what is best for *you*, not peer pressure or brand prestige.
Do not attend a university simply because it has a lower acceptance rate. A prestigious name is worthless if the environment doesn't support your personal and academic well-being.
April 29th - May 1st
Submit the Deposit (Decision Day)
Log into the applicant portal of your chosen university and officially accept your offer of admission. You will need to pay the non-refundable enrollment deposit to secure your spot in the incoming freshman class. Take a screenshot of the confirmation page for your records.
Do not submit deposits to multiple schools to 'buy more time.' It is an unethical practice that violates the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) guidelines and can result in your admission offers being revoked.
May 2nd
Decline Other Offers & Celebrate
Once your spot is secure, log back into the portals of the other colleges that accepted you and formally decline their offers. This is a crucial professional courtesy—it immediately frees up space for a student waiting anxiously on the waitlist. With the logistics handled, it is time to buy the hoodie, celebrate with your family, and enjoy the rest of your senior year!
Your chosen college will immediately begin sending you critical deadlines for housing applications, orientation registration, and final high school transcripts. Do not tune out just because the deposit is paid!
