August 1st (The Rollout)
Account Creation & The Split-Screen Setup
The new Common App cycle officially launches on August 1st every year. Don't wait until the fall to get started. Create your account immediately, and set up your workspace: open the Common App in one browser window and the AXS Companion in another. The AXS tool provides bite-sized, modular video guides for the initial registration, ensuring you select the correct applicant type and graduation year without second-guessing yourself.
The AXS Companion does not require a login and never tracks your personal data. Having it open on a split screen allows you to pause the instructional video modules exactly when you need to fill in the corresponding Common App fields.
Early August
Building Your Digital Dashboard
Before you start writing essays, you need to build your college list within the app. The AXS Companion walks you through the "College Search" tab, showing you exactly how to add universities, locate their specific application fees, and track their unique deadlines (Early Action, Early Decision, or Regular Decision). This transforms a chaotic process into a centralized, highly organized dashboard.
Not sure which schools to add? This is where professional guidance pays off. Capstone’s Custom College List (CCL) service helps families build a perfectly balanced list of reach, target, and safety schools tailored to your academic profile before you even open the app.
Late August
The Core Profile & Extracurriculars
This is the most tedious section of the application: inputting your family demographics, educational history, and the Activities section. The Common App severely limits your character count for describing extracurriculars. The AXS Companion provides strategic advice on how to use those limited characters efficiently, ensuring admissions officers understand your leadership roles and tangible impact without getting bogged down in fluff.
Admissions officers read thousands of applications. Use the AXS modules to learn how to format your activities list with strong action verbs and clear metrics so your resume pops off the screen.
September
Decoding FERPA & Recommenders
You will encounter the FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) release authorization. It sounds intimidating, but it is a standard legal requirement. The AXS Companion clearly explains what waiving your FERPA rights actually means for your application's credibility. It also guides you through the process of assigning teachers and counselors to submit your transcripts and letters of recommendation.
From an admissions perspective, you should always waive your right to view recommendation letters. It signals to the college that the teacher’s endorsement is candid, honest, and uncoerced.
October
The Personal Statement & Supplements
Once the data entry is done, it is time for the heavy lifting: the essays. The AXS Companion breaks down the main Common App essay prompts and helps you understand exactly what colleges are looking for. Furthermore, it helps you navigate the "My Colleges" tab to find the hidden, school-specific supplemental writing questions that often catch students off guard at the last minute.
While the AXS tool helps with logistics, a compelling essay requires a human touch. Capstone works one-on-one with students to brainstorm, structure, and refine their personal narratives so they stand out in a holistic review.
November
Financial Aid & Fee Waivers
Applying to 6-10 colleges can get expensive. The Common App includes a specific section for requesting application fee waivers if you meet certain financial criteria. The AXS Companion provides a step-by-step walkthrough on how to accurately request these waivers, ensuring that the cost of applying never stands in the way of your educational goals.
Remember, the Common App fee waiver is entirely separate from the FAFSA or CSS Profile. You will still need to submit those financial aid documents separately according to each institution's strict priority deadlines.
Pre-Deadline (Dec/Jan)
The Final Audit & Submission
You’ve done the work. Now, use the AXS Companion’s final review checklists to audit your entire application before hitting submit. The tool shows you how to generate a PDF preview of your application—exactly as the admissions committee will see it. Check for formatting glitches, truncated text in your activities list, and missing green checkmarks on your dashboard before paying the fee and sending it off.
Do not wait until 11:59 PM on deadline day. Servers routinely crash due to high traffic. Submit your applications at least 48 hours early to secure your peace of mind.
